Marisha absolutely wins at costumes as Lisa Frank Castle.

Travis is wearing these enormous bright orange padded gloves and no-one can take him seriously.

“I think they are picking the lock on this safe.”
I am deeply enjoying Caleb as the narrator in the room above where Fjord and Avantika are getting their underwater cultist on.

IT’S THE FAMED FJORD/JESTER KISS OMGGGG
(Poor Laura! Ofc this had to happen while she’s not there!!)

“Was I at zero hit points?”
“Yeah, when you’re drowning it reduces to zero hit points.”
Thus continues Cad’s Worst Holiday Ever

Fjord: “Seems like [Avantika] knows who the third [chosen] is, or had been?”
I mean, based on the merrow episode, surely it is or was Vandren? I mean, this seems the obvious thing based on what we know so far?

Caleb to Fjord: “If you’re after what [Avantika] is after, I can’t speak for the others, but I’m not interested in being here any more.”
I’ve seen a few posts talk about how Beau has changed so much and Caleb hasn’t, and I disagree vehemently.
Beau has come further. She’s made so much progress, partly inspired by Molly’s death, but remember that she was trying to better herself even before the Iron Shepherds. She just needed to finally find somewhere where people would accept her as who she was so that she could drop a lot of her distancing techniques and allow herself to care for people. (And she cares so much.)
But Caleb has changed too. He actually talks about valuing the Nein, not just to Nott, as he did a little while ago, but to the Nein themselves. And Caleb at the beginning of the campaign wouldn’t have bothered to have this conversation with Fjord or the rest of the Nein. He would’ve taken Nott aside, told her he was uncomfortable with the direction the party was taking, and that they should start making plans to slip away.
This is progress. He’s trusting the Nein enough to speak up and express an opinion about their future. Heck, he’s thinking about the future.
Beau has had a hard life, but Caleb has deep, life-altering trauma. I’m not playing a game of ‘who’s got it worse’, but trauma is so hard to come back from. Trauma lies and tells you that you’re still in the same place you were when you were traumatised. Trauma does everything it can to prevent you changing and growing. We’re just not gonna see a rapid change in Caleb’s character. But we are seeing changes.
Both Liam AND Marisha make really interesting character choices, and I’m not here for anyone being dismissive of either of them.
(I mean, have favourite characters all you like. Fuck knows I do. You just don’t need to rag on the players or the characters you don’t like.)

“I’m pretty simple. These days I’ve spent with you are the most exciting of my entire life. I’m not about to end them, or the world, by frivolously give up something that I barely understand.”
Aw, Fjord. <3
It’s funny, I enjoy his character, but I feel distanced from him. I feel like his character’s given us the least insight into himself. Part of it is Fjord actively hiding things from the others (and not having a Nott that he confides in), and part of it is that what we know about him is action: “I was in a shipwreck and woke up with powers.” There’s no emotion there; no discussion of how he felt about Vandren himself. Fjord doesn’t give us a window into his interior life. Part of it is hinted at by that accent from last episode: we now know there is a large part of himself that Fjord is keeping back. Like, watch how careful he is in his discussions with Avantika. He’s still careful around the Nein, albeit to a lesser extent.
It’ll be fun to see some more of Fjord himself come to the fore (as it were) as the campaign progresses.

Caleb (to Fjord): “You do what you have to.”
Caleb’s Coping Motto(™)

“Can you tell me about this previous Chosen?”
“His name was Vandren.”
I FUVKING KNEW IT DIDN’T I JUST SAY

“I’m gonna try the old lean in and see what the reaction is.”
oh man this is hilarious but I am also having intense second-hand embarrassment vis-a-vis Fjord and Avantika’s flirtations

Caduceus: “Sleep well with your bad decisions.”
OMFG
I want to embroider this as a fucjing sampler and hang it in my bedroom.

And that's the end of episode 40.
