Critical Role liveblog episode 30: Where's Molly?
Time to watch the unexpectedly devastating episode 30.
“Where’s Molly?”
Of course this is one of the first things that Jester says. Of course. THEY DON’T KNOW.
This is fine. I’m fine. I’m just gonna sit in this corner and stare at nothing for a bit.
Jesus, Laura is killing me. I know I’ve been saying it a lot in these liveblogs, but I really wish I could still cry.

“Oh, yes. He took a position of authority while you were gone and he rose to the occasion.”

Is this how Our Heroes find their way to the Menagerie Coast? Man, watching knowing snippets of stuff to come is weird.

The letter’s from Avantika!!! (I had so assumed her name was pronounced Avan-TEA-ka, not Ah-VAN-tih-ka. That’s the problem with reading a lot of posts and gif captions, I guess.)

Ohhhhh I am having lots of FEELINGS about Caleb and his pride in making his little safety dome for them all to sleep in. Just. A lot of feelings.

I really appreciate how much Liam embodies Caleb. I was thinking about this with the whole fire gem discussion with Beau. Like, his discomfort and awkwardness is almost tangible. It’s just beautiful.

TALIESIN STOP MAKING CHARACTERS WHO ARE EXTREMELY RELATABLE TO ME PERSONALLY IT FEELS LIKE AN ATTACK

Caduceus’s voice is … starting to do it for me. This is a problem. It’s that gravel that I swear Taliesin didn’t have in his voice last episode.

OH MY GOD @ornerine drew Caleb saying “This is going really well” as he did compulsively at the worst moments of last episode as the “This is fine” dog and IT’S AMAZING
#

I’m watching this at midnight and I’m having to smother my laughter at Fjord trying to be subtle. It’s a beautiful thing.

First in-game reference to the Empire Kids, I think. Also I am deeply enjoying Caleb’s “Beauregard, who are you really?” conversation.

It’s nice that they left that card draw to Taliesin.

“I made the earth remember him.”
#
“Come, everyone Molly wanted us to keep living.”
“And make things better.”
#
“Silently, you all look over your shoulder, unable to look away, until eventually the hills break the horizon, and you’re unable to see the last standing coat and gravesite of Mollymauk.”
That was beautiful. The cast look as destroyed as I feel.

Caleb to Fjord: “You cannot blame yourself when you are taken advantage of.”
It’s struck me several times that Caleb is capable of looking at other people in similar situations to his and going “it’s not your fault”, but at the same time considering himself as, to quote Liam, “an irredeemable shitstain”.
Then I remember that I’m way more capable of extending sympathy and understanding to other people, and I’m always half-convinced that the partners and friends who treated me shittily probably had good reasons for it, and then I have to metaphorically go lie down somewhere for an hour and meditate on there being reasons why I got overattached to both Caleb and Molly.

On the mistakes the M9 made around the Iron Shepherds leading to the captures and Molly’s death:
Caleb: “And we’re never going to forget it. It’s going to ride with us until we’re dead.”

Fjord’s talking about his motivations now, and how getting kidnapped put everything into perspective, and I love this episode so much. So much emotional development.
#
Fjord: “There’s not much that gets [Jester] down. It’s kind of inspiring.”
Caleb: “I think it’s an act.”
Having seen the tearful conversation between Jester and the Traveller that’s yet to come, I know Caleb’s right in this moment, and I feel like this is one of those moments that pre-trauma Caleb shines through. I know from an author note on a Caleb-centric fic that Liam said that Caleb was trained to be charming, and I think that pre-trauma Caleb was very good at people.

“I would like to talk to Travis out of character about swallowing long, whole swords.”
Liam, I try to remember that you’re married and not to have Thoughts about you, but sometimes you make this very difficult.

I fell asleep before posting this and although I swear I wrote something else here, it's been eaten.
Anyway, this was a spectacular episode, though painful. So much good character work coming through. I kinda want to rewatch it, though perhaps not until I'm caught up with the live episodes.
